first_time asked:

I’m going to Vegas this next summer and I want to hit the tables while I’m there. I’ll probably be there for about 4 - 5 days. About how much money will I need to play poker for a few hours a day while I’m there?

Well, it depends what limits you want to play. The lowest limit NL Texas Holdem game you’re going to find is $1/2 with a $200 max buy in. I wouldn’t sit at that table without at least $400 ($600 or even $800 would be better). If you are going to play limit, you need at least 50 BBs per session, which would be $300 at a $3/6 table.

But that’s just a daily budget. How well you do will certainly play into the total amount you need to bring. I’d say to bring at least $1000, and $2000 would be better if you hit a bad run. But really, bring what you can afford to lose, and if you get down too much just find something else to do.

Another strategy could be to play just tournaments, then budget yourself out according to how much you want to spend. For example, you could say you were going to try to play one $100 (or two $50) tournament per day, and that’s it. If you did that, about $600 is fine.

Enough so that if you lost continuously you would still have some left to get home on.

Well it depends on how much you want to spend.

The CHEAPEST game is Downtown Fremont Street at the El Cortez Casino where they have a 1-3 and 1-6 on the river limit game, with a $20 buy-in. Also on Freemont you will find some 50cent/1 no-limit games.

Then you can head to the strip and get in on the 1-2/2-4 and so on higher games. Also quite a few tournies going on 24hrs a day at different casinos. I recommend the Morning/Afternoon Tournies at the TUSCANY CASINO just off of the strip.

    Good Luck

I went down just two months ago and played quite a bit (probably 10 hours in 4 days) and brought $1500 with me playing 1-2 no limit. Came home winning about $700 but was down to about $600 earlier in the week. Bring down a set amount for each day, not the whole week, once you lose that much for the day, quit and go do some sightseeing.

the lack of specifics in your answers makes you come across as somewhat of a noob. i recommend bringing as little as possible. are you talking about no limit or limit games. what size tables do you plan on playing? how long have you been playing? are you talking cash games or tournaments?

Well this depends a lot on how good a player you are. You should have at least a grand and if you’re a losing player and to the degree that you are you’re going to need more. If you want to be sure you won’t bust out on a down swing then obviously more is better.
